The following week comes around at the pace of a three-toed sloth and I’m going stir crazy. Dean is due to come home on Thursday, two more days. The level of excitement that I’m feeling is unfathomable, I can barely sit still. On the Tuesday afternoon while I’m on a run, my phone rings and I stop running to retrieve the phone out of the strap attached to my right arm and answer.

“Hello,” I answer panting, leaning over to place my hands on my knees. The phone beeps indicating a video call is coming through.

Dean’s name flashes across the screen and I smile, pushing the green button to answer it. “Hey you, you’re a little early today.” I tease, standing upright and inhaling deeply to fill my lungs.

“Hey.” My stomach immediately drops when I see the grim look on his face, and the dejected tone to his voice. “Are you on a run?”

“Yeah, just about to finish up.” I frown, “Are you okay?”

Dean shakes his head and rubs his forehead. Even through the phone I can sense his agitation. “No, not really, but I don’t have a lot of time to talk baby. I wanted to call you and tell you face to face.”

Dreads fills me and I bite the inside of my cheek to keep the tears at bay. He’s not coming. “You’re not coming home, are you?” Dean baulks and I already know what he’s going to tell me.

“No, baby, not just yet. Unfortunately, they’ve had to extend our deployment for another four weeks.”

Fucking hell.
